Why is Pay such an Issue again in 2025 - 2026

Since 2010, our pay has eroded by an average of 25%.  Between 2019 and 2024, our pay continued to fall behind inflation, whereas private sector pay rose by 2.4%.  These are the years where NJC increased on 2 consecutive years by £1920, and £1290.  Considering the years when we received between 0%  and 2%, £1920 now looks like a pretty decent settlement.  For full time workers £1920 equates to £1 an hour increase.  This years pay increase for a minimum wage earner, is 39 pence per hour!

It's daylight robbery, except they are stealing from the poor.

The Institute of Fiscal Studies; Recent trends in public sector pay, evidences the real cuts that we have endured which stretch back beyond 2010.  It also highlights the fightback from Trade Unions in recent years, with more days lost to industrial action in 2023 than the previous 10 years combined.

Recruit your colleagues

It’s a basic trade union fact, but there really is strength in numbers! The more people in the union, the greater the impact any action we may take will have, so why not ask your work colleagues if they are in UNISON, and if not, would they like to join.

You don’t have to be a union steward to recruit – in fact the more of us asking everyone, the more we can create a ‘union atmosphere’ in the workplace.  One that is supportive of each other and a colleague who you can trust.  Union membership is increasing in the County Council and Schools, you won't be alone, and you will have someone to talk too in real confidence.

People can join online at the UNISON website or if you contact the Branch, we can get membership forms to you. If you work in or near New Shire Hall in Alconbury, you can call in the Branch office when you are next visiting. For full contact details go to the Contact The Branch page.

Become a Pay Champion

Pay Champions are great at getting the message out.  The Branch will send you direct information on the ballot, it will be your job to get this information to your work colleagues.  We also want you to encourage them to vote, as this remains vital in beating the anti trade union legislation.  If this is a job for you, contact the Branch and we will add you onto our Pay Champions list.

Unison Cambridgeshire Meetings

The Branch is holding regular meetings throughout the NJC pay ballot period.  There is also a National briefing being held on the 12th September.  Take a look at the Events page on this website for more information and the important link to join.
