UNISON's General Secretary Election
Who is the General Secretary and what do they do?
Unison's current General Secretary is Christine McAnea. Christine has been the GS for 1 term, being elected in 2021 after long time GS Dave Prentis retired. As General Secretary, she has responsibility for managing the staff of the Union and holds responsible for the direction of their work which is set by the National Executive Council, the NEC.
Who's in the frame so far?
Unison's General Secretary ballot procedures have recently been published (end of July). Prospective candidates can now start their campaign with the nomination period opening on 20 August and running until 26 September. The Branch will be having a nomination meeting on 16 September, if you want to attend, please let the Branch know.
As the campaign period has only just opened, the Branch is currently aware of only one candidate, and that is Andrea Egan.
It would be unusual for the union not to put anyone up, so we can assume that as there has been no other indication, that Christine MaAnea will be standing for a second term. Christine has herself indicated in the past that she will be standing again, however, the Branch is not aware of any official announcement to confirm this.
Once the branch find out more, we will post on this page, along with any relevant information on the candidates that we are allowed to publish.
Unison has strict rules regarding the use of 'union resources'. Candidates cannot use any Unison resources to advertise their campaign, such as the Union print shop, telecommunications, email, website or any social media site that is promoted or maintaned by the union.
The Branch is not endorsing any candidate until the nomination meeting is held.
