The annual Service Group Executive two day policy meeting happened over the weekend 16-17 July.
The weekend raised many discussion points which directly affect members in Local Government. These include the cuts to funding, which are affecting all Local Government workers across the country. The latest figures were difficult to comprehend in how these savings could be made. The feeling was that implementing the next 3 years of projected cuts, would hollow out an already hollowed out service, making it difficult to recover, when funding improves.
Pay and remuneration was also high on the agenda. I write this with 2 weeks to go before the end of the only guaranteed way, Unison members in CCC can improve their pay. I am hopeful that members will have returned their ballot papers, and voted for action.
The weekend did not solely restrict itself to the 2 major issues above, we discussed the plight of Migrant workers in the UK, and the exploitation that they receive on a regular basis. Schools issues included the new negotiating body, which was included in the King's speech, so will become law in the coming months. A huge step for School Support Staff in our Branch.
